Reading a Game's Controls Before You Press Play

By Site EditorPublished Updated 2 min read

TL;DR

You do not have to lose your first three lives to work out the controls. Here is the 20-second routine that works on every browser game we have published.

Most people lose their first attempt to a game that never told them which button to press. Here is the routine that avoids that, and it takes about twenty seconds.

Step 1: Look for the controls panel, not the game

Games that ship with a proper controls panel put it in a fixed spot — usually below or beside the play area, sometimes behind a small "?" icon. If you see one, read it. You are now done.

Step 2: Assume nothing about the arrow keys

The single most common mistake: assuming the arrow keys move you. In a lot of ports it is WASD. In some, arrows move and WASD is decorative.

To find out in two seconds, watch the character while you press one key. If nothing happens, try the other cluster.

Step 3: Find the one button that matters

Almost every game reduces to one primary action — jump, shoot, fire, confirm. Find that button first and ignore everything else. Once you have it, you can learn the rest while playing.

Step 4: Check whether the game wants the cursor

Some games need you to click into the play area first so the keyboard focus lands there. If your keypresses do nothing at all, click once inside the game and try again. This is the single most common "my controls are broken" cause.

Step 5: Know how to pause

Before you start, find the pause key. Losing a run because you could not stop is the most annoying avoidable outcome in browser games.

What this saves you

Twenty seconds of setup removes the most common cause of a bad first impression. A game that feels unresponsive is often just a game that never received your keystrokes.

If a game still controls badly after this routine, that is a real bug rather than a learning curve — and it is worth telling us about. See our contact page.
